Juneteenth Festival of Morris County
June 17, 2023 @ 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM EDT
The Morristown Juneteenth Weekend is a collaborative endeavor by five non-profit organizations – Morris Arts, Art in the Atrium, Sankofa Heritage Collective Morris County, Mayo Performing Arts Center, and the Morris Museum – presents a rich, three-day cultural experience that commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Centered around the major cultural venues in Morristown and Morris Township, this engaging event provides a platform to celebrate the African American community through diverse expressions of art, food, music, and more, free of cost to the public. It is a living canvas that portrays the vibrant spirit and traditions of the African American community and encourages a broader understanding of its historical and cultural narratives.
The weekend ends with a grand finale on Saturday, June 17, on the Morristown Green and Pioneer Plaza with FREEDOM DAY: The Juneteenth Festival of Morris County. Designed as a family-friendly celebration, the festival is a testament to the resilience, solidarity, and rich cultural heritage of the Black community. Live performances by The Kofi and Sankofa Drum & Dance Ensemble and local artists reverberate through the event, while a tribute to famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who made a historic visit to Morristown in 1865, adds a historical note. Attendees can enjoy DJ sets, savor a variety of food, explore community resource tables, and experience the Atlantic Health pavilion, all against the backdrop of a main stage bustling with live entertainment.
